The skincare industry has long been criticized for lacking diversity, with many products and services catering only to a limited range of skin types. However, in recent years, there has been a growing movement towards inclusivity and representation in the industry, with more and more Black dermatologists and skincare professionals rising to prominence and advocating for greater diversity.
One of the critical challenges facing the industry is the lack of representation of Black skin in skin care products and advertising. This has led to many Black consumers feeling alienated by the industry and struggling to find products that cater to their unique needs and concerns. In response, Black dermatologists have been working to raise awareness of these issues and push for greater representation and inclusivity in the industry.
Black professionals like West Room Cosmetics’ founder and CEO, Dija Ayodele, are taking Black skincare representation further. The licensed aesthetician founded the Black Skin Directory, the world’s first-ever chemical peel information guide for Black and darker skin tones. The directory offers everything from product recommendations to essential skincare and health advice. Ayodele is dedicated to empowering skincare and beauty industry professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide exceptional care for consumers with diverse skin tones.
Lack of access to culturally conscious Black skin professionals
Another industry issue is many Black consumers lack access to adequate skincare services. This is particularly true in low-income communities, where access to dermatologists and other skincare professionals may be limited. Black dermatologists have been working to address this problem by advocating for greater funding for skincare programs and services in these communities and providing educational resources to help consumers better understand their skin and how to care for it.
Overall, the rise of Black dermatologists in the skincare industry is a positive development that is helping to bring greater diversity and inclusivity.

“I have left Detroit a million times, and I keep returning to it,” says Melissa Butler, The Lip Bar founder and CEO. After residing in cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami and New York, the beauty entrepreneur brought her booming beauty company back home in 2019.
At that time, the company had bounced back from rejection on the Shark Tank in 2015 to negotiating its first major distribution deal with Target just three years later. Known for its vast array of bright colors, the vegan brand was already a massive success through online and outsourced retail distribution. When it came time to open her first (and she says, only) physical location, however, Butler knew there was no place she’d rather be.
“I was living in New York at the time, and I just felt like New York didn’t need me, but I could add a lot of value to my city,” Butler recounts. While it might have been a coded inclusion that only some recognized automatically, she explains that Detroit has always been a part of the Lip Bar brand. Her product line is inspired by the city’s unique fashion and beauty aesthetics and the thriving hair culture surrounding Butler since childhood. Much of the marketing campaign around the Lip Bar’s 2022 collaboration with fellow Detroiter Mia Ray – aptly named The D Girl Collection – was drawn from her experiences as a teenager getting to know the city and figuring out what to adopt into how she would present herself to the world.
But while each trip home filled Butler with hope for the city’s future, especially in creative and entrepreneurial spaces, she realized outsiders often only spoke of Detroit’s past, as though the city had peaked with glory days so far behind that they might not ever be reclaimed. “I wanted to remind people that we can admire and appreciate our past, but we also have the ability to carve out our future,” she adds. “So I was like, ‘I’m moving back home. I’m going to open up a store at home. I’m going to remind Detroiters of the possibilities because everything is possible if we let it be.”
Whether on a conscious level or not, Butler is pouring back into her city in the same ways that it’s poured into her. She speaks of Detroit with a fondness that speaks directly to the nurturing environment she’s evolved in here since childhood. And for her, one of the greatest attributes of that environment has been its ability to center Blackness, she explains.
“It just feels warm and fuzzy,” she gushes. “It feels like a safe haven for Black people. I’ve always said that coming from Detroit, I’ve experienced Black privilege. We always talk about white privilege, but there is a Black privilege in a city like Detroit because we are the majority. And we grow up understanding that like you have successful Black people, and then you have some not so successful Black people. It allows you to see both sides so that you are not believing what the media says about Blackness, because you know what it’s like to have a Black mayor and a Black police chief and a Black everything. So you don’t have to feel othered in your Blackness.”
Butler adds that the confidence built in that environment has been bolstered by the city’s insular nature, which breeds a spirit of collaboration and support. Still, despite the city’s “Little Big Town” feel, as she describes it, she points to the fact that Detroit’s influence on the world simply cannot be discounted. “This is a space where creativity is really held in a very high regard. Like, we built cars, we built pop culture, music as you know it. We have so much influence on the world. Sometimes we don’t get enough credit for it.”
To that end, Butler has set her sights on becoming the city’s next globally renowned entrepreneur, following in the footsteps of Berry Gordy and Henry Ford. That is one of the main reasons she doesn’t intend to open another brick-and-mortar Lip Bar location. She wants to keep the root of her success firmly planted in Detroit. But Butler’s success should also serve as a point of hope and encouragement for many whose childhood was impacted by the perils of inner city life, especially in the ’80s and ’90s, because hers is a tale of triumph that happened despite the adolescent trauma of having to navigate the world with incarcerated parents.
Contrary to what some might expect, she does not begrudge her parents for their decisions, which ultimately affect their lives. (“Pick the things you’re gonna hold because you don’t have that much space,” she shares on forgiveness.) But it has inspired her to forge her path in the world.
“You are not your childhood, you are not your environment, you are not the experiences,” she offers as parting advice. “Every day, we have the ability to wake up and decide the life we are going to live. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy. And it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be overnight. But if you see greater for your life if you know that you have this burning desire in your belly that says, ‘I’m gonna go after this,’ you have to trust yourself. The decisions that my parents made, the mistakes that my parents made, or the lessons that my parents had to go through, do not have to be my same lessons.”
Aside from her recent announcement that she owns the largest Black-owned makeup brands sold at Target, Butler continues to elevate her company to new heights, most notably with the release of TLB’s latest superfoods skincare collection. The collection offers three beauty staples: The Clean Up Gel Facial Cleanser, the Snap Back Skin Serum, and the Dew Me Daily Moisturizer. According to the company, all of these are enriched with powerful ingredients like Blueberry extract, Reishi Mushroom and more.
While much of her success is due to her grit and unwavering confidence, her ability to define success on her terms is what continues to further her horizons.
“You have to figure out what does success mean to you. Not every business is going to be a billion-dollar business. Not every business is going to be a million-dollar business. But that doesn’t mean that those businesses aren’t valid… We’ve gotten so caught up in the hype of business that we forgot that business is very much like beauty in that every one of them is unique.”

Sixty years ago, one of the “greatest demonstrations for freedom in the history of this country” took place on the Washington, DC Mall, according to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The magnitude of this campaign was not lost on him, even before he was prompted to eloquently transition to his famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” No one expected over 250,000 protestors to show up, but they knew that if they planned to stand up for equality, jobs, and freedom, Washington, DC was the place to be on August 28, 1963.
The March on Washington of 1963 wasn’t the first time a large-scale demonstration in DC was planned by labor leader A. Philip Randolph and master strategist Bayard Rustin. During World War II, the organizers were disillusioned by the hiring in the defense industry and the treatment of Black men valiantly serving in a segregated army, so they threatened a DC demonstration. The 1941 march was called off after President Franklin Roosevelt acquiesced with Executive Order 8802, which outlawed racial discrimination in military employment practices. In 1957 a Prayer for Pilgrimage and Freedom took place on the third anniversary of the passage of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education.
Yet in 1963, one hundred years after the signing of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, America had not dealt with racist policies that failed to grant Black Americans equal access to jobs, fair pay, voting rights, fair housing, and an end to segregation. This time, the march was epic, banding together the support of Hollywood celebrities and leaders of labor, civic, faith, and human rights organizations in a peaceful protest. At this scale, the event was radical for its time as the media covered the national spectacle only to broadcast the country’s international shame of violent racial terrorism weeks later.

After the March, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 came about after the tragic deaths of four little girls in a Birmingham church weeks later and months after President Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 would follow the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb, Viola Liuzzo, and the brutal Bloody Sunday attacks in Alabama. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 would follow the assassination of the Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis.
Tragedy after tragedy, America demonstrates it has the resourceful fortitude to exercise political will for the greater good when pressed to do so. As a self-ascribed, exceptional model of democracy, this country must decide if it will lead proactively or reactively when it comes to civil and human rights.
The First Amendment rights to free speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly expressed during the March on Washington are not the only weapons for social change. Today the arsenal is amplified through 24-hour digital and social media, but the toolkit for liberation was assembled centuries ago when the first enslaved humans arrived in this nation. They included revolts, escape, protest, community empowerment, defiance, and resilience. This nation has risen from the ashes of a civil war by rebuilding. It’s time we defy the traditional waves of violence by ensuring all boats rise successfully and equitably.
What if we envisioned stronger communities with access to affordable housing, excellent schools across neighborhoods, exceptional health care not tied to employment, clean water and air despite zip codes, and adequate living wages for all? What if access to the ballot was protected with the same vigor with which it is now suppressed? What if leaders not only addressed these issues during campaigns but, with merit or consequences, were held accountable within the offices they were elected to serve?
In 2023, this country is again at a strategic crossroads. BLAC: Mike, your journey through the world of music is impressive. You’ve effectively merged various musical influences into your art, thrilling audiences with your unique blend of genres and your unapologetic Afrocentric viewpoint in your compositions.
Mike Monford: My journey has indeed been vibrant, marked by exposure to broad genres and a multitude of artists from a young age, thanks to my parents’ eclectic record collection. This early exposure to artists such as Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, James Taylor, Elton John, and others opened my eyes to a breadth of musical styles, undoubtedly influencing my creative evolution.
BLAC: Your soon-to-be-released album, “The Cloth I’m Cut From”, has certainly piqued the interest of fans. Could you share a bit about the influences behind its creation?
Mike Monford: “The Cloth I’m Cut From” signifies a comprehensive culmination of my musical journey to date, anchored strongly in my heritage and roots. The album is a manifestation of my personal and artistic evolution, offering listeners an immersive journey through all of my musically influential experiences, from my childhood to the present.
BLAC: It’s noteworthy that you have dedicated considerable energy towards mentoring and teaching aspiring musicians in Detroit. What fuels your commitment to fostering these young talents?
Mike Monford: My obligation to pass on the musical legacy stems from the teachings of my mentors, who impressed upon me the significance of nurturing the next generation. It is my firm belief that diverse, knowledgeable teachings are pivotal for young minds to grow and thrive. I’m essentially endeavoring to do my part in continuing this invaluable cultural relay.
BLAC: Your opportunity to perform at the celebrated Carnegie Hall must have been an incredible moment in your musical journey. Could you share more about the experience?
Mike Monford: Performing at Carnegie Hall was indeed a profound experience, both personally and professionally. As an ensemble, our performance was imbued with the essence of Afrofuturism, merging tradition with forward-thinking concepts. The enormity of the setting was not lost on me; it was humbling to honor the legacy of my mentors and our shared ancestors on such a prominent platform.
BLAC: Apart from being a prolific musician, you’ve also actively engaged in educational pursuits at the University of Michigan and Cranbrook Art, specifically writing a curriculum on Afrofuturism. Can you delve deeper into this project?
Mike Monford: Yes, education is another facet close to my heart. The curriculum I am involved in developing aspires to safeguard and propagate African and indigenous traditions inherent in jazz. At Cranbrook, our mission is to instill in students a deep understanding of Afrofuturism, Audio Physio Psychic Millennium music, and the Black experience. It is a concerted effort to ensure cultural relevance and continuity, thus enabling communities to remain firmly connected with their roots.
The verdict is in — African American judges from Detroit, Michigan to Jackson, Mississippi are being judged unfairly by the very systems of justice they serve. And Black people in both places are being disinfranchised as a result.
In Mississippi, the Department of Justice has sued the state to stop efforts disenfranchising citizens living in Jackson – a majority Black city and state capital – over a new law that allows judges to be appointed rather than elected by its residents. Black votes are stripped from Black folks who undoubtedly elect Black judges to represent them on the bench.
Drive just a few hours north to Michigan and we find a similar situation centered around Detroit; another majority Black city, with Black votes and Black judges getting a raw deal. Here, activists have noted in the last four years, 80 percent of all the disciplinary actions against judges have been levied against African American judges.
Eighty-percent is an alarming statistic. Clearly, justice for Black judges is not blind. Don’t get me wrong. Everyone expects judges to follow the same laws as everyone else. They serve as arbiters of the law, sit in judgment over defendants and settle civil disputes between the rich and poor alike; they should be policed and held to a higher standard for their conduct in and out of court. But 80 percent of all the disciplinary cases in Michigan are centered on Black judges?
But 80-percent is a ridiculous statistic when we consider only 16-percent of the state’s judiciary is made up of Black judges. And just like we found out how policing tended to disproportionately focus on Black citizens, this statistic is strong evidence the same thing is happening to Black judges.
Yes, we like to put people on pedestals and are often disappointed when they don’t live up to our lofty expectations. Priests, politicians, movie stars, athletes and all those lifted by fame or fortune fall from grace from time to time. Judges are no different. Putting on a black robe doesn’t make them infallible. They are people prone to make poor choices in everything from court rulings to personal conduct at times. And the news reports of shenanigans we have seen judges of all colors engaged in from the U.S. Supreme Court on down detailing of a litany of egregious actions on and off the bench prove this to be true.
However, what is not true is that somehow Black judges are more prone to engage in actions that break the rules. In Michigan, people are concerned Black judges are being disproportionally investigated and punished. Civil rights activists, lawyers, and faith leaders are raising their voices in protest. Letters about the disparity have come from the community’s leading voices: the ACLU of Michigan, the Detroit NAACP Branch, the Black Women Lawyers Association, the Association of Black Judges of Michigan, Michigan Clergy Connect and other local leaders/concerned citizens. Even Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has taken note of the issue.
In a June 15, 2023, letter to the state supreme court, Gov. Whitmer notes the disparity and writes, “I care deeply about advancing equity and diversity across government, including on the bench, because I believe that a government that can better reflect its people, can better serve its people.”
She’s right. Representation on the judicial bench matters. And that truism is under attack from the same forces working to dismantle progress we’ve made as a society in everything from civil rights to criminal justice reforms after hundreds of years of institutionalized racism, codified by law, born in slavery and bred by Jim Crow
80-Percent of All Punishment is at Black Judges: Nothing to See Here. Move Along.
In response to the complaints, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission defended its position by saying there is no disparate treatment between white and Black judicial defendants because when you add in the number of white judges who choose to retire before being handed down a decision, the numbers are equal. Still, the commission says it’s conducting an independent audit to be sure.
Translation: we didn’t do anything wrong, just give us a minute to get our story straight. This have your cake and eat it too decision by the MJC is both dismissive and tone deaf to the concerns raised. Eighty percent of all the judges persecuted are Black. No audit report can explain that away by coming up with numbers showing how most of the White judges quietly leave when they get notice of investigative proceedings while Black judges fight on to be vindicated.
Black judges have little recourse but to defend themselves. Where are they going to go? Nationally, only 4.5 percent of all the lawyers out there are Black. Leaving the bench under a cloud of suspicion doesn’t make finding employment likely. In fact, getting booted from the bench anywhere in the country for misconduct is exceedingly rare making the prospect of a Black judge removed from the bench returning to a successful career as a lawyer even more challenging. A 2020 investigation by Reuters determined nationally “9 of every 10 judges were allowed to return to the bench after they were sanctioned for misconduct…” Ironically, shortly after this piece grabbed national headlines, is the period when critics note Michigan started dropping the hammer on Black judges.
And if it’s true most White judges cut and run when facing investigations, then that is a sad indictment on the system policing judges. They’d rather not participate in a process likely to find them guilty at the end of the day.
If White judges, as the MJC says in its defense, are walking away believing the system used to determine their innocence or guilt in a complaint is rigged against THEM, then how is the public supposed to have confidence Black judges are being treated fairly in the same process? They won’t.
We’ve had police reform, sentencing reform and bail reform – all designed to address injustices, inequities, disparities and treat people more fairly. Judges are people too. It’s time for leadership in Michigan to publicly engage in judicial reform, revamp the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission and address the inequities in the system that polices, tries and sentences judges. And it’s time we all stand up for the people in Jackson, Mississippi who are having their judges stripped away by a draconian law robbing them of their right to vote for who will sit on the bench in their own city and settle matters of local law.
The system we have created to elect, appoint and police judges; judges us too. Wherever we live as Americans, we can’t expect a justice system that treats judges unfairly to then turn around and treat us fairly in court.
Everyone deserves to be treated fairly by the court system – even judges.

Sometimes polling data can reveal more than the numbers they supposedly project. It can be a case of anything from needing to understand the question to being naive about the answer. The latter may be the case in a new poll from Northwestern Mutual that showed African Americans (62%) more confident than the national average (52%) that they’ll be financially prepared to retire.
Chicago-based Northwestern Mutual Financial Advisor Jabari Turner told BlacFinance he has severe doubts about those numbers based on his experience with a predominantly Blac clientele.
“My overall fear is that they have a false sense of security regarding the amount of money they actually need to retire. It’s an overall lack of awareness and all the more reason they need someone like me,” he said. “It’s revealing to them to show they’ll actually need to save $4 to $6 million.”
In the same study, Americans, on average, believed they would need $1.27 million to retire comfortably, an increase from the $1.25 Northwester Mutual found last year in its annual Planning and Progress Study.
That number is a long hike from the money most Americans have saved. The Northwestern Mutual study found that the average amount adults in the U.S. have put away for retirement is $89,300.
Turner says the biggest mistake he sees from his clients is the procrastination surrounding planning for long-term savings and investments. “They wait too long to save because they think they need a substantial amount of money to start,” he said. “Doing something now is better than doing nothing at all.” He also says some clients are shortchanging their futures by exchanging financial security for their kid’s college educations. “Kids can take out loans for college, but their parents can’t take out loans for retirement.”
One of the other interesting aspects of the study showed that African American respondents have the most confidence in receiving an inheritance to support their retirement, compared to the national average. Turner says when dealing with realistic expectations for his clients, he is aware his opinions are not loved but needed.
“Hey, I’m definitely not the fun police and I have to strike a balance where if you’re prepared for the long term, you’re better off. My Mom is a retired principal and lives off her teacher’s pension. I tell my clients to take advantage of what’s available,” he said. “The real barrier is that they’re not teaching personal finance in school and I spend a lot of time walking my clients through the basics of budgeting, savings and distribution plans.”
